Emmy-nominated star of Hill Street Blues Barbara Bosson dies aged 83

Actress Barbara Bosson has died at the age of 83, her director son, Jesse Bochco has confirmed.

The star was best known for her role as Fay Furrillo on Hill Street Blues and had been previously nominated for an Emmy five times for her portrayal of the character.

She also received an Emmy nomination for her part as prosecutor Miriam Grasso in Murder One.

Son Jesse took to social media to announce she died on February 18. In his heartfelt statement, he wrote: "More spirit and zest than you could shake a stick at. When she loved you, you felt it without a doubt.

"If she didn’t, you may well have also known that too. Forever in our hearts. I love you Mama."

Barbara's start in the industry came in Steve McQueen's film Bullitt before featuring in detective series Mannix.

Her big break came in NBC's Richie Brockelan, Private Eye, before featuring in Cop Rock. Her last roles saw her feature on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Total Security and Scattering Dad.

However, it was her portrayal of needy ex-wife of Captain Frank Furrillo in Hill Street Blues for which she will be best remembered. She starred on the NBC series between 1981 and 1986.

Following news of her death stars and fans alike took the time to pay special tributes. Among them was Bosch star Titus Welliver, who starred alongside Barbara on Murder One.

He wrote: "The beautiful and wonderful Barbara Bosson has left us. Colleague, friend and surrogate mother.

"My heart is shattered by her departure. Bow your heads for her loved ones who are so very devastated by her departure. Love you Babs, you made us all better with your kindness."

Actress Jennifer Tilly also wrote on Twitter: "Rip Barbara Bosson, a lovely lady and a fine actress. We did a scene together on my last appearance on HSB. The director told us 'We need some chitchat before Jennifer gets killed'.

"So she asked me about the future & I adlibbed I wanted to take cooking classes & then I got shot."

She is survived by son Jesse, daughter Melissa and her two grandchildren.
