Prince William will visit New York in September after being forced to cancel his trip last year following the death of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

The heir to the throne will be in the United States to attend the Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit, where the 2023 finalists of his environmental awards will be named.

The Earthshot Prize aims to discover and scale-up groundbreaking solutions to repair the planet and £1 million in prize money will be presented to the winners in five categories, or Earthshots – Protect and restore nature; Clean our air; Revive our oceans; Build a waste-free world; and Fix our climate.

It's the first time he's been to New York officially since 2014, when he visited the state with Princess Kate. Last year the couple went to Boston for the 2022 Earthshot Prize Awards.

Wills was due to make the trip last year for the inaugural summit, but was unable to travel as the royal family were observing royal mourning following the death of the late Queen.

After she passed away on September 8, the Royal Family entered an official period of mourning in which they didn't carry out any engagements. The New York trip was due to take place on the 21st.

Instead, William recorded a video which was played at the event.

He told those gathered: "During this time of grief, I take great comfort in your continued enthusiasm, optimism and commitment to The Earthshot Prize and what we are trying to achieve.

"Protecting the environment was a cause close to my Grandmother’s heart, and I know she would have been delighted to hear about this event and the support you are all giving our Earthshot Finalists – the next generation of environmental pioneers.

"Together in this room, are the people and organisations who will help us to achieve the Earthshot mission: to repair, restore and rejuvenate our planet within this current decade.

"That mission is not simple."

William's trip will kick off on September 18 with the summit, which falls in New York Climate Week and the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly, will be held the following day.

It will bring together previous Earthshot Prize winners and finalists with policymakers, global business leaders, philanthropists and climate activists to scale their innovative solutions.

Former New York mayor and business news mogul Mike Bloomberg, a global adviser to Earthshot Prize winners, will give a speech at the event.

Singapore will host the third awards ceremony in November, after prize-giving events were staged in Boston last year and London’s Alexandra Palace in 2021.
