Marc Cucurella believes that his former Brighton teammate, Moises Caicedo, has his heart set on joining him at Chelsea this summer.

The highly-rated midfielder, 21, has been courted by several of the Premier League's biggest clubs over the past few months including Arsenal, who saw a number of bids for the Ecuador international rebuffed in the January transfer window.

Liverpool are another club who are known to be admirers of Caicedo but it's Chelsea who have emerged as the frontrunners to sign the Seagulls lynchpin. The Londoners are expected to return with a new proposal after their latest offer, which was believed to be worth £70million, was recently knocked back by Brighton.

And Cucurella, who swapped the South Coast for Stamford Bridge himself last summer, has backed Caicedo to be a success at the club if a deal can be struck in the coming weeks.

Speaking to the media in the United States ahead of Chelsea's pre-season friendly against Wrexham, the defender said of Caicedo: “I think he wants to come here, I’ve read in the media a lot of times. For me, I have a really good relationship with him because we played together at Brighton.

“He’s a top player, a good midfielder, if he came here I think we’d have a top midfielder for a long time.”

Chelsea shelled out £62m to bring Cucurella to west London last summer, but the Spanish international endured an underwhelming maiden campaign. That - coupled with the size of the Blues' bloated squad - has led to speculation that the wing-back could be offloaded in the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old has made it clear, though, that he has no interest in cutting his spell at Chelsea short. When he was asked about said speculation and whether or not he plans to stay at the club, Cucurella said: “Yes, for sure I want to stay at Chelsea. I am very happy here.

“It wasn’t an easy season and it was difficult for all the players, we needed time to adapt. You arrive at a big club, you need time to adapt, the results don’t arrive, you feel more pressure and, of course, we are football players but we are normal people as well.

“We have problems in our personal lives and people need to understand this as well. This is part of life and these things can improve in the future. I am very happy, I have a lot of energy and I am happy to stay here and do my best for this team and club.”
