Disney's live action Snow White replaces dwarfs with magical creatures
Disney's live action Snow White remake has replaced dwarfs with magical creatures in the upcoming film.
Photos from the movie set show that the reimagining of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has been adapted to avoid misrepresentation of people with dwarfism.
Pictures reveal that multi-racial, multi-gender and people who vary in height are referred to as "magical creatures" compared to the seven dwarfs who featured in the 1938 original.
Those who are working on the movie were spotted in Bedfordshire last week. Rachel Zegler is set to take on the main character of Snow White.
The photos confirm Disney's decision to "re-imagine" the dwarfs after actor Peter Dinklage put the original under fire. He criticised the studio for originally making the decision to recreate the original 1938 version.
Gales, snow and rain to batter country today with 80mph wind gustsHe was not opposed to a remake of the film as long as it was given a "cool, progressive spin", he said the studio needed to go "all in" with the new version, he said on Marc Maron's WTF podcast.
At the time, a Disney spokesperson said that to "avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community."
The photos of filming seem to show that just one person of the seven "magical creatures" appear to have dwarfism.
The live action movie is set to have a slightly different storyline as there will not be a Prince Charming featured. Instead, the story will portray a "stronger" Snow White who wants to become a leader. This means there will be no scene where Snow White is woken up by a "true love's kiss".
Snow White is being directed by Marc Webb, based on a screenplay by Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson.
Gerwig is the person behind the much-anticipated Barbie movie which is set to be released this month.
Walt Disney Pictures and Marc Platt productions are set to produce Snow White.
Gal Gadot is playing the Evil Queen, Andrew Burnap is the male lead and Andu Kabia is playing the Huntsman.
