"Why do men have a problem with powerful and famous women?" is a question that has been popping up all over social media in recent days - and months... and years...

This question though has been more prominent recently because singer Ariana Grande is reported to have split from her husband Dalton Gomez after he allegedly "struggled to adjust to her fame" following their quiet married life when the pandemic was at its peak.

Reports say that the real estate broker "struggled to come to terms with being married to one of the world's biggest celebrities", as per Radar Online.

Fans have now been asking why men like Dalton Gomez, and Joe Alwyn who split from Taylor Swift earlier this year after he "struggled" with her fame, struggle deeply with being romantically involved with powerful women who are both famous and successful.

With the news of Ariana's alleged separation form Dalton emerging online, fans have been quick to weigh in, with one writing: "So basically he couldn’t handle the fact that she is ARIANA GRANDE." And another saying: "Did he not understand he married one of the most famous people of our time?"

Someone else likened Ariana's situation to Taylors, with them penning: "Joe Alwyn and Dalton Gomez when the Pandemic ended: what do you mean you're a mega pop star with millions of fans? Why didn't you tell me? That's so inconvenient for our relationship!!"

But The Mirror US want to understand why some men struggle to have relationships with powerful women, so we have enlisted the help of senior therapist and relationship expert Sally Baker from Working On The Body, who told us that "societal expectations and traditional gender roles can challenge these scenarios".

Speaking exclusively to Mirror, she said: "The cases of Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez, as well as Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn, are pertinent examples. Historically, men have been the 'providers' in relationships, and this often extends to being the more successful or powerful partner.

"This dynamic can be traced back to patriarchal structures that have dominated society for centuries. When a woman outperforms her male partner regarding success or power, it can challenge these deeply ingrained societal norms and expectations."

She went on: "Ariana Grande, Dalton Gomez, Taylor Swift, and Joe Alwyn were all in high-profile relationships where the women were arguably more famous and successful. It's essential to note that fame isn't just about success—it's a lifestyle that comes with constant scrutiny, pressure, and a lack of privacy.

"The intensity of this exposure can be overwhelming for anyone, regardless of gender. It's possible that 'fame' was too much for Gomez and Alwyn, not because they were less successful, but because they were unaccustomed or ill-prepared to handle such a lifestyle."

Sally then touched on how self-esteem can also play a significant role, urging how men can feel insecure or inadequate if their partner is more successful.

"This is especially true in a society that often equates a man's worth with his professional success. Such feelings can strain relationships, leading to their dissolution. Even in the case of Grande and Gomez or Swift and Alwyn, it's important not to oversimplify or generalise their reasons for splitting up," she urged.

Sally noted how relationships are complex and multifaceted, and while fame might have been cited as a reason, "there were likely other personal or relational factors at play".

"It takes men who are secure in their self-worth to overcome societal expectations; the pressures of fame and self-esteem issues can make it challenging to maintain relationships with more successful or powerful women," Sally went on to say.

She concluded: "However, as society evolves, these dynamics are changing. More men are becoming comfortable and supportive of having a successful woman as a partner. Remember that each relationship is unique, and broad generalisations may not always hold."

This comes as some fans show support for people who are in relationships with famous or successful people, with one person taking to Twitter to write: "I see lots of people drawing comparisons between Dalton Gomez and Joe Alwyn and sh*tting on them because they allegedly couldn’t handle their wife/girlfriend’s fame. But it can be very hard to be involved with someone famous."

While someone else added: "Everyone keeps saying 'he knew what he was signing up for' like there isn’t a massive difference between thinking & actually experiencing. They met and got married during covid, where he was experiencing a mere fraction of her lifestyle."
