Technical glitch on BBC Breakfast leaves reporter ‘sounding like Minnie Mouse’

BBC Breakfast was thrown into chaos on Tuesday morning with a live broadcast forced to abruptly end due to technical issues.

Presenters on the slow paced early morning BBC show looked fraught as a segment about the troubled 2026 Commonwealth Games in Australia went awry.

Sports presenter Mike Bushell was chatting to correspondent Shaimaa Khalil who was reporting live from Melbourne to discuss the forthcoming games.

The sporting event has been thrown into chaos as organisers have suddenly cancelled their plans to host the games due to spiralling costs.

But it was the BBC that ended up in chaos on Tuesday as a glitch left Shaimaa sounding like she had been turned into a malfunctioning robot.

Mike Bushell introduced a BBC Breakfast segment about the Commonwealth Games (BBC)

At the start of the segment, Mike explained: “Once again, the Commonwealth Games organisers are searching for a host for 2026.

“Our correspondent Shaimaa Khalil joins us from the state capital Melbourne to tell us more about this, good morning Shaimaa.

"This is a huge call to make then, isn't it? Tell us more about what the Victoria organisers have been saying."

Footage cut to Shaimaa while she was standing in a sports venue Down Under and the report got off to a good start.

But Shaimaa Khalil's report was cut short due to a technical glitch (BBC)

She explained: “Well, they've been saying that the Commonwealth Games are going to be all cost and no benefit for Victoria and this is what the state premier has basically said.”

However a technical issue then affected the broadcast, altering the sound of Shaimaa’s voice.

Seemingly unaware, she continued: "This is the reason they are no longer hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2026, they're terminating the contract.

"So the games were supposed to be budgeted at around £1.5million, they said as it stands this budget has tripled and -"

Shaimaa was then cut off and cameras cut back to Mike - who sternly announced: “Yeah, apologies for the technical problems there, this is a developing story, we'll have more on that throughout the morning on Breakfast.”

The incident drew attention from some viewers, with one commenting: "#bbcbreakfast loving that a sound error turned the reporter's voice into Minnie Mouse during a live report."

Later, Mike discussed the Commonwealth Games crisis in more detail with hosts Sally Nugent and Ben Thompson.

He said: "[It's] a real worry, it's about the whole future of the Commonwealth Games.

"Basically, what's happened overnight is the state of Victoria, due to host the Commonwealth Games in 2026, as said, 'Actually, we can't now.'

"The budgets have spiralled - tripled. They're quoting £3.13 billion."
