BBC Breakfast's Carol Kirkwood says she has 'no plans yet' to marry fiancé

BBC's weather presenter Carol Kirkwood has opened up about her wedding plans after becoming engaged to police officer Steve Randall.

The 61-year-old meteorologist and former Strictly Come Dancing contestant has been in a relationship with Steve, 47, since 2021 and they announced their engagement in May last year.

And while the duo have been blissfully engaged for over a year, it seems they are in no major rush to get down the aisle together.

As well as presenting the weather, Carol is also an accomplished novelist and her forthcoming third book begins with her characters preparing for an imminent wedding.

Asked by Best Magazine if this was a nod to her own impending nuptials, Carol laughed off the suggestion. She said: “Not just yet! We know we are definitely going to get married – we just haven’t sorted out the details yet.

“We’re just enjoying being engaged to be honest.”

Carol was previously married to Jimmy Kirkwood but the couple divorced in 2008, while Steve was previously married to his now ex-wife Nichola Randall but they split in 2017 after 12 years of marriage.

Carol declared her engagement during a live broadcast from the Chelsea Flower Show in May 2022, where she was reporting from a year after she suffered an on-air gaffe when she was knocked over by a dog.

She recalled: “The stand-out one has got be be in 2021, when the dog knocked me over on-air, at the Chelsea Flower Show (and it happened again at Wimbledon this year!). I don’t think I will ever live that down – it follows me wherever I go.”

Reflecting on more mishaps when live on air, Carol discussed her struggle not to laugh when one of her weather broadcasts went wrong.

She told Best: “Just the other morning, we had a few technical issues while I was presenting the weather. The camera in front of me has a reverse map of the UK on it – and next to that is the TV monitor of what you guys see at home.

“So I was merrily presenting the weather and I could see that what you guys were seeing at home wasn’t me – it was still on the presenters.

“I couldn’t stop my segment and I was trying not to laugh… The hardest thing is not to laugh when things are going wrong!”

Carol and Steve have kept their romance largely out of the public eye.

A neighbour of the pair recently told the MailOnline: “Steve's a great bloke, very friendly and easy to talk to. You don't see him and Carol out and about that much but when you do, they like walking along the Thames.

“He was visiting Carol all the time and then moved in last year. They're both very down to earth and make a lovely couple.“
