An FBI profile of the Gilgo Beach serial killer has resurfaced - after chilling similarities were drawn between it and the man accused of murdering three of the victims.

That profile described a 'sadistic but charming average Joe', who could blend into any environment unnoticed.

Heuermann lived a seemingly normal, average Joe life until yesterday when he was charged with killing Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello. He is suspected in a fourth woman's death.

On Friday the married Long Island architect father pleaded not guilty.

Detectives claim they matched DNA from pizza that the suspect ate to genetic material found on the women's remains.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison told a news conference on Friday: "Rex Heuermann is a demon that walks among us - a predator that ruined families."

The profilers told The New York Times in 2011 that the suspect was likely financially stable and bright.

Forensic profilers and serial killer experts said that the perp who dumped the bodies of four women along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo State Park between 2007 and 2010 was probably an educated, professional white male with a family living on the South Shore of Long Island,

“This is someone who can walk into a room and seem like your average Joe,” Scott Bonn, an assistant professor of sociology at Drew University in Madison, NJ, said of the person responsible for the deaths of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello.

“He has to be persuasive enough and rational enough that he is able to convince these women to meet him on these terms. He has demonstrated social skills. He may even be charming.”

The experts estimated that the potential suspect was anywhere between his 20s to his 40s.

Now 59, Heuermann would have been around 46 when the last Gilgo victim, Costello, was killed in September 2010.

Where the four bodies were found is another interesting sign, as former FBI profiler Jim Clemente said there was a “seasonal nature” to the then-unknown suspect’s ties to the area where the bodies were found.

“It may be the time his wife or kids or parents are away for the summer. There are many possibilities,” he told the Times.

Investigators said Friday that Heuermann’s wife, Asa Ellerup, and children were out of town around the time three of the woman vanished. She was in Maryland when Waterman disappeared, his bail application revealed.

She was in New Jersey when Costello vanished and Iceland when Barthelemy was last seen alive, the document also claims.

Meanwhile Heuermann also bears similarity the description that cops compiled after one of the women disappeared.

Heuermann, 59, is accused of paying victim Amber Costello for sex services the day before she disappeared, but was chased off by an individual posing as her significant other "with the purpose of making that individual uncomfortable having them leave without retrieving his money," Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said during a press conference Friday.

That man was described by witnesses as a white man between 6'4 and 6'6 with dark hair and glasses.

"Also of significance was the fact that he was driving a dark-colored or black at first, a first-generation Chevrolet Avalanche," Tierney said.

When police started looking at Heuermann in 2022, they thought he matched the description to a T.

"Right away, there was some commonalities that came right to the forefront," Tierney said.

"Rex is 6'6 -- a large person, not necessarily muscular, very physically large person. He has glasses. He has that dark hair, and also a particular note: he owned, at the time, that first-generation Chevy Avalanch."

Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to all charges — including three counts of first-degree murder — related to the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello.

He is also the prime suspect in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, the first of the so-called “Gilgo Four” to go missing.
