Titanic director James Cameron has denied "offensive" rumours that he is planning to create a drama series based on the fatal OceanGate submarine disaster.

Taking to Twitter, the 68-year-old hit back at the speculation as he insisted he will never be creating a film about the tragic incident.

All five passengers on board the small submersible died after their journey went catastrophically wrong. It's thought the vessel imploded "in under a second" while attempting to dive to the bottom of the ocean.

"I don't respond to offensive rumors in the media usually, but I need to now. I'm NOT in talks about an OceanGate film, nor will I ever be," James wrote.

He was forced to speak out about the rumours after it was reported that he was "ready" to bring the disaster to the small screen.

James was alleged to have been in talks with a major streaming platform about the possible production, with Matt Damon even tipped as the front-runner for a leading role in the drama series.

A source had claimed: "The Titan disaster is already being looked at as a major series for one of the world’s biggest streamers — and James is first choice for director. It is a subject close to his heart."

Speaking to The Sun, they added: "He told the story of the Titanic so compassionately it feels like a natural step for him to take this on.

"Retracing the steps of those on board the Titan is a massive undertaking but there would be a lot of time, money and resources dedicated to it."

The sub imploded in the North Atlantic last month while on an expedition to the wreckage of the Titanic off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. It collapsed in on itself due to the immense pressure of being so deep underwater.

A huge search effort was launched, but days later debris from the sub was recovered.

James, who is an expert on deep-sea exploration, was vocal about the Titan mission when the search and rescue team was frantically looking for the vessel.

Following the announcement that debris had been found of the vessel, the director told the BBC the Coast Guard search "felt like a prolonged and nightmarish charade where people are running around talking about banging noises and talking about oxygen and all this other stuff".

"I knew that sub was sitting exactly underneath its last known depth and position. That's exactly where they found it," he said.
