Fans have paid tribute to the “incredible” radio legend Tony Butler, who has died at the age of 88.

The broadcaster was famous for his blunt and outspoken style, and he hosted local BBC radio shows in Birmingham, including the breakfast show on BBC Radio WM.

Tony has been credited with inventing the radio football phone-in, and tributes flooded in for the sports radio pioneer.

“He was an icon, he was a great and he changed broadcasting in this country and possibly all over the world,” BBC Radio WM's Daz Hale said, calling him a “giant” in broadcasting.

Tony was also immortalised in a famous stand-up routine by comedian Jasper Carrott, who impersonated his forthright style.

He began his journalism career at the Birmingham Post and The Telegraph, before working as a freelance sports journalist at BBC Radio Birmingham in the 1970s.

Former colleague Stuart Linnell told the BBC Tony was a “legendary broadcaster” and would be missed by many.

“They used him on air but his Midlands accent was so strong they felt that the listeners, even the Birmingham listeners, wouldn't really understand him on the radio so they gave him elocution lessons,” he recalled.

“I learned so much from watching Butler, and I shall always remember him with great, great fondness,” Stuart added.

Tony won a lifetime achievement award at the Sony Radio Awards in 2007, and retired in 2012.

Fans took to Twitter to share their fond memories of the radio presenter following news of his death.

“A true radio presenter. Loved listening to his shows. RIP Tony,” one wrote.

“The sound of my childhood! I’ve only got one word to say… Rest in Peace Tone,” another added.
