Piers Morgan has joined a growing number of people to appeal to the mystery BBC star at the centre of a sex picture scandal to step forward and reveal themselves in order to save their own reputation and the reputation of their co-stars.

The 58-year-old television host says the “scandal feels like it is snowballing” now that more people have stepped forward to accuse the BBC star of inappropriate behaviour.

And he thinks each new revelation will intensify the speculation surrounding the star’s identity - risking more innocent presenters falling under the suspicion of the public.

Piers has warned that is is inevitable that a politician or journalist will ‘blurt out’ the name of the BBC star, and he recommends the mystery person should name themselves and defend themselves.

Taking to the air of his TalkTV show Piers Morgan Uncensored, Piers gave an overview of events so far - referencing The Sun’s original report with the parents of a teenage crack addict who the BBC star allegedly paid £35,000 to receive explicit photographs.

He highlighted the more recent development where a second individual stepped forward to accuse the BBC star of contacting them via a dating app, pressuring them to meet, and then sending that individual abuse when they threatened to speak out.

Appealing for the BBC star to unmask themselves, Piers said: “While this crisis rages on, the BBC and the presenter involved are still leaving other male stars to defend their own reputations.

“Presenters like Gary Lineker, Rylan Clark and Jeremy Vine have all been disgracefully smeared and defamed by armchair detectives who don’t understand the devastating impact it has.”

He predicts: “The situation is clearly untenable. Every journalist and politician in the Britain knows exactly who the presenter is.

“Increasingly, members of the public know who it is because of the way social media behaves these days, and more of them will work it out by the minute.

“If you take a major star off air without warning, viewers will notice.”

Piers stressed: “I don’t know if the presenter’s broken any laws. I do know his name. There are very good legal and ethical reasons why I’m not saying it, like everybody else.

“But it’s only a matter of time before he loses agency in this situation and somebody blurts it out in parliament or on a less responsible network.”

He said: “For the good of his colleagues, the BBC, and himself and his reputation, it is surely time for that presenter to reveal his own identity and vow to clear his name and defend himself if that is what he can do.”

Piers’s comments follow on the heels of Jeremy Vine who also appealed to his BBC colleague to step out from the shadows.

He tweeted on Tuesday: “I’m starting to think the BBC Presenter involved in the scandal should now come forward publicly. These new allegations will result in yet more vitriol being thrown at perfectly innocent colleagues of his. And the BBC, which I’m sure he loves, is on its knees with this.

“But it is his decision and his alone.”

However, fellow former BBC star Richard Bacon slammed Jeremy for making this suggestion, warning in a tweet of his own: “Stop it. “You’re more emotionally intelligent than this. We don’t know the complexities of what his family are going through. Or what dark thoughts are running through his head.

“Irrespective of what he’s done wrong. You can walk off people wrongly guessing it’s you for 5 minutes.”
