Emma Mackey has revealed that the next series of Sex Education to air will be her last, having no plans to reprise her role as Maeve Wiley for a potential fifth season.

While attending the BAFTA Awards, the actress, 27, admitted she will not make a return to the comedy drama, having just completed filming for the fourth series a few weeks ago.

Mackey’s character, Maeve, was one of the central characters on the popular Netflix show. However, series four reportedly sees the character take a step back.

She went on to win the BAFTA Rising Star award, being nominated for her portrayal of Emily Brontë in Emily and appearance in Kenneth Branagh's Death on the Nile.

Speaking to RadioTimes about exiting Sex Education, Mackey said: “Season 5? I’ve just finished the fourth one last week! No, I don’t think I’ll be in season 5. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve.”

Ahead of filming the latest series, Mackey said: “It feels very familiar! And it’s a bit more sporadic because we have more characters. So there’s… I’m not in it as consistently.

“But we’re in the middle of filming now, and I’m excited to be back. And yeah, I’m intrigued to know what’s going to happen – because I also don’t know. I’m also finding out as we go along, so it’ll be fun!”

The actress is not the only fan-favourite set to move on from Sex Education after series four, with Ncuti Gatwa, who played Eric Effiong, also making his departure from the show.

The actor, who also co-stars with Mackey in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, has been named as the 15th doctor in the Doctor Who series.

On leaving Sex Education, he took to Instagram to upload a sweet post, writing: “Last day. Last time. Bye bubs, thank you for all the lessons and for all the strength.”

The fourth series of the comedy saw multiple actors leaving the series, including Rakhee Thakrar, Tanya Reynolds, Patricia Allison and Simone Ashley.

New cast members are set to feature in the series, including Jodie Turner-Smith, who joined the show after being personally asked by Ncuti Gatwa.

During the BAFTA Awards, Turner-Smith told reporters: “You may or may not see me in a little Netflix show called ‘Sex Education’.”

She will be joined by new stars, Dan Levy, Thaddea Graham, Marie Reuther, Felix Mufti, Anthony Lexa, Alexandra James and Imani Yahshua.
