Nicky Campbell appears to have reported a troll to the police after he was accused of being the BBC presenter who allegedly paid a teenager more than £35,000 for sexually explicit pictures.

The broadcaster and journalist was among the many BBC presenters to be accused of being the unnamed star by trolls on social media.

It comes after reports emerged a BBC presenter allegedly paid more than £35,000 for sexually explicit pictures of a teenager when they were 17-years-old.

Taking to Twitter, Nicky said: "I think it’s important to take a stand. There’s just too many of these people on social media. Thanks for your support friends."

He then shared a screenshot from an account who claimed Nicky was the unnamed BBC presenter at the centre of the claims. The radio journalist also posted a pic of a response from the Metropolitan Police, thanking him for reporting a crime.

Nicky isn't the only BBC star to come out to deny being the mystery presenter amid much online speculation. Rylan Clark, who previously presented Strictly It Takes Two and a BBC Radio 2 show, told his Twitter followers on Saturday morning : "Not sure why my names floating about but re that story in The Sun - that ain’t me babe. I’m currently filming a show in Italy for the BBC, so take my name out ya mouths."

While BBC Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine also took to Twitter to shut down any suggestion he is the unidentified person, tweeting: "Just to say I'm very much looking forward to hosting my radio show on Monday — whoever the 'BBC Presenter' in the news is, I have the same message for you as Rylan did earlier: it certainly ain't me."

Gary Lineker also joined the growing list of male celebrities to deny being the presenter, as he tweeted: "Hate to disappoint the haters but it’s not me."

Piers Morgan offered his thoughts on the claims on the social media platform - implying the potential scandal will "rock Britain" if and when revealed.

The former Good Morning Britain anchor tweeted an image of The Sun's front page report and told his followers: "This is a huge scoop and a massive scandal that will rock Britain."

Addressing the original story, a BBC spokesperson told the Mirror on Friday: "We treat any allegations very seriously and we have processes in place to proactively deal with them. As part of that, if we receive information that requires further investigation or examination we will take steps to do this. That includes actively attempting to speak to those who have contacted us in order to seek further detail and understanding of the situation.

"If we get no reply to our attempts or receive no further contact that can limit our ability to progress things but it does not mean our enquiries stop. If, at any point, new information comes to light or is provided – including via newspapers – this will be acted upon appropriately, in line with internal processes."
