A woman who was kidnapped and held captive for a year managed to break free and ran into a nearby petrol station to get help.

The woman, who has not been identified to protect her, fled after the suspect allegedly choked her.

She fled to the petrol station in New Jersey, US, followed by the suspect and begged for help.

Her alleged kidnapper James W. Parrillo, 57, has been arrested and faces multiple charges.

He is accused of choking her multiple times and threatening to murder her family if she left him.

The New Jersey Attorney General's office have said the suspect may have engaged in similar behaviour in different parts of the US and is known to have gone by different aliases.

After cycling to the petrol station, followed by a man, the woman was taken to the shop's back office and was kept separate from her kidnapper.

Attorney General Matt Platkin said: "We are reaching out to law enforcement across jurisdictions to identify other people who may have additional information on the defendant."

He added: "Our investigation is ongoing and we are committed to doing everything we can to ensure we bring justice to this survivor."

The woman was first befriended by the suspect in New Mexico when he was going by the name Brett Parker.

He asked her for a ride to Arizona and they later embarked on a one-month consensual relationship.

But Parillo choked the woman and made her feel "that she was unable to leave the relationship," authorities say.

The 57-year-old took away the woman's phone, spent money on her debit cards and stopped her contacting her family.

In late 2022, the two arrived in Burlington County, New Jersey, where Parrillo rented a room using an alias.

After being choked during an argument, the woman eventually managed to flee on February 7.

She told two attendants at the petrol station that the suspect had held her for about a year.

Service station manager Jaitin 'Bobby' Madaan told reporters that the woman was 'terrified' when she arrived.

He said: "She was shaking, she could barely get her words together but she kept saying, ‘He has kept me against my will for over a year. He kidnapped me.'"

The suspect arrived at the petrol station shortly after but staff stopped him getting to the woman.

Surveillance footage shows him attempting to get through the door she had dead-bolted.

When police arrived, the suspect allegedly refused to give his name which led to his arrest.

Parillo has now been charged with first-degree kidnapping, stalling his own processing, two counts of aggravated assault, criminal restraint, and obstruction, according to court documents.

Pearl Minato, the director of the Division of Criminal Justice, said, 'The allegations, if proven, demonstrate a level of predatory conduct that poses an extreme danger to anyone who crosses paths with this defendant.'
