It's been almost 40 years since The Breakfast Club was released and it's safe to say the stars of the film have changed quite a lot since.

The movie has become one of the most iconic teen films of all time and helped its young cast by launching many of their careers.

The Breakfast Club tells the story of five teenagers who find themselves spending nine hours together in a Saturday detention, each given the task of writing a 1,000 word essay describing "who you think you are".

Over the course of the film, the characters break down the high school cliques of the 1980s as they come together to submit a single essay which is signed: "Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club."

The film has continued to be adored by fans, with cast going on to achieve a lot in their careers.

Here, we take a look at how the cast of The Breakfast Club have changed over the years.

Molly Ringwald

Molly Ringwald was a huge star in the 1980s, having acted in The Facts of Life prior to playing popular girl Claire Standish in The Breakfast Club.

She's best known for working with The Breakfast Club's director John Hughes, having also starred in his films Sixteen Candles and Pretty In Pink.

Molly, now 55, was offered the chance to star in the filmmaker's 1987 film Some Kind of Wonderful, but she turned down the role through fear it was too similar to her other films.

That's not the only movie Molly has opted out of, having also been offered parts in Pretty Woman and Ghost.

In more recent years, the actress has starred in ABC's The Secret Life of the American Teenager and has released a book of short stories.

Molly was married to writer Valery Lameignère from 1999 to 2002.

She married her second husband Panio Gianopoulos in 2007 and the couple share three children - daughter Mathilda and twins Adele and Roman.

Anthony Michael Hall

Anthony Michael Hall was just 16 years old when he played Brian Johnson in the 1985 film.

The actor received wide-spread praise from critics and was widely regarded as one of the movie's stand-out performers.

In The Breakfast Club, Anthony's character candidly discussed his struggles with mental health and constant pressures to perform at school.

He gained sympathy from his fellow pupils, with the film helping to break down stigmas.

After The Breakfast Club, Anthony went on to work for Saturday Night Live and took on roles in Edward Scissorhands and the 2021 film Halloween Kills.

Anthony, now 55, made headlines back in 2016 when he was charged with assaulting his neighbour. He was subsequently sentenced to three years of probation.

The Hollywood star married actress Lucia Oskerova in 2020 and in February 2023, they announced they are expecting their first child.

Emilio Estevez

Emilio Estevez, now 60, was one of the biggest stars to come out of The Breakfast Club, having portrayed the athletic Andrew Clarke.

The actor, who is the son of Martin Sheen and brother to Charlie Sheen, went on to work on the 1992 film The Mighty Ducks.

However, despite having the start of a very successful acting career, Emilio decided to take a step back.

Instead, he's turned his attention to directing and worked on the 2006 film Bobby and The Way in 2010.

He also directed his famous brother in Men at Work and made a guest appearance on Charlie’s show Two and a Half Men in 2008.

In 2021, Emilio returned to acting to star in the Disney+ revival of The Mighty Ducks called The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, but he left the show after one season.

The filmmaker was married to Paula Abdul from 1992 until 1994 and shares two children with his ex-partner Carey Salley - son Taylor and daughter Paloma.

Ally Sheedy

Ally Sheedy starred as outsider Alison Reynolds in The Breakfast Club, with her character undergoing a stunning transformation when she is introduced to makeup.

She acted alongside some of her co-stars in St Elmo's Fire and a 2003 episode of The Dead Zone. She also had roles in Short Circuit and High Art.

As well as her film credentials, Ally took part in the 1999 off-Broadway musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

In 2022, she returned to the screen and starred in TV series Single Drunk Female.

The actress, now 61, was married to actor David Lansbury from 1992 to 2008. They share a son, Beckett.

Judd Nelson

Judd Nelson undoubtedly inspired a number of teenage air punches and angsty fashion after starring as the criminal John Bender.

In the film, John unexpectedly bonds with his classmates and even ends up kissing the popular Claire.

Judd's character ended the movie in the now-famous scene of him walking across the school field while throwing his fist into the air in triumph.

The 63-year-old has teamed up with his co-star Ally Sheedy on a number of different occasions, including in the films St Elmo's Fire and Blue City.

Since the 2000's the actor has starred in a number of hit TV shows including CSI, Psych, Suddenly Susan and Empire.
