Argos is to close all of its remaining stores in the Republic of Ireland by the end of today.

The retailer, which is owned by the Sainsbury's Group, confirmed in January that it was closing all 34 Irish stores by Saturday, June 24.

Argos has already closed four sites but will shut the remaining thirty today. Sainsbury's told The Mirror that all stores would be closed for good by 5pm.

The Argos owner said it arrived at the decision to leave Ireland following a long period of "careful consideration" and a "thorough review" of its business and operations in the country.

Argos opened its first outlet in the Republic in 1996, however, the retailer said the investment to develop and modernise its Irish part of the business was "not viable" and that the money would be better invested elsewhere.

Customers will still be able to shop at the retailer until it shuts its doors for good today.

It should be reiterated that Argos' Northern Irish, Scottish, Welsh and English stores.

Overall the move put around 580 jobs at risk - with the hours worked by staff equating to around 330 full-time roles.

At the time, Mandate Trade Union said it was "disappointed" about Argos' decision to close all of its Republic of Irish branches and said it would "engage intensively" with the company to get the best possible deal for workers.

In January, Argos said it would be consulting with staff and offering an "enhanced redundancy package".

Although it did confirm that a "small number" of staff would not be eligible for redundancy under Irish law and were set to receive a "one-off goodwill payment".
