Donald Trump’s campaign team says the former US president is ‘safe’ after gunshots were fired near his golf club.

He was golfing at Trump National Golf Club in West Palm Beach in Florida at about 2pm local time on Sunday when multiple shots were fired.

‘Five black SUVs blocked in a grey Mercedes in front of the golf course,’ Palm Beach resident Max Egusquiza told reporters, adding: ‘There were about 20 or more cop cars flying from nearby streets.’

Trump’s campaign communications director Steven Cheung said ‘President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity’.

His campaign team has declined to give any further details ‘at this time’.

In a statement, the US Secret Service said it is investigating the incident alongside the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said no injuries were reported.

It’s not yet known if the gunshots were targeted at Trump, the Republican presidential nominee.

It comes just over two months after he was shot during an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania, injuring his ear, on July 13.

Trump’s golf club is located about five miles from his Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach.
