EastEnders have been hinting about Cindy Beale's return on the BBC soap ever since the Knights stepped foot in Walford.

On the BBC One soap last night, it was confirmed that Cindy Beale - played by Michelle Collins - is not actually dead and is now living in France. She will return to the soap in huge scenes this summer, alongside her ex-husband Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt).

Bosses confirmed that the soap had been working on this storyline since last summer, but they have been dropping some huge clues for months about the real identity of Rose Knight. We take a look back at what you might have missed as the plot surrounding Rose Knight thickens, and we learn where Cindy has been all these years as we last heard she had 'died' in prison.

A dead rose

When the Knights made their arrival into Walford, we saw one of the daughters handing a rose to Linda. As she handed it over, the rose died within seconds - but later, in another trailer, the rose was seen coming back alive.

Fans are now convinced this was one of the first hints that Rose Knight was 'returning from the dead', and given that everyone thought Cindy Beale had died off screen whilst in prison, this seems the most likely way they hinted at it.

Roses were also seen in the Beale household last night, which seemed to prove a connection between Rose and the family.

All in a name

Cindy has had many kids - and now she's got two more. After it was confirmed that she is Rose Knight, it was also revealed that she is the mother of the two children - Gina and Anna. The pair are the daughters of Rose and George Knight, played by Colin Salmon.

Fans believe the BBC soap hinted at Cindy being Rose when they revealed the girls' names as they're sure that Cindy chose the name Gina for one of her daughters in honour of her own sister, who has the same name.

'Rose's disappearance

Before the reveal, little was known about who Rose Knight really was, but all we did know was that Rose mysteriously disappeared from George's life around nine years ago. We aren't aware of the circumstances of why she disappeared, with initial suspicions she had been killed by George and thus that was why she had 'disappeared'.

However, this coincides with when Lucy Beale - Cindy's daughter - was murdered. Could this be why she left?

A private investigator

A private investigator was tasked with trying to find Cindy when Ian and the Mitchell brothers went to Italy in 1997. The investigator was called Ros Thorne, and the teaser trailers about the big reveal had the tag line 'every Rose has a thorn'.

According to some viewers, this has been the biggest clue that Rose had something to do with Cindy Beale as they made a connection between the tagline and the name Ros Thorne.

A link to the Square

When the Knights first arrived in the Square, they famously said they felt like they'd been there before.

As far as we know, the Knights had never visited the area. We know Elaine - Linda's mum - had been on the Square in the past, but George and his daughters Anna and Gina had not been to visit.

When they said they'd felt they'd visited before, could this have been a huge hint at their familial link to Walford?
