BBC Breakfast turns awkward as Sally Nugent tells Carol Kirkwood to 'have a nap' after joke blunder

Things got awkward on BBC Breakfast earlier today thanks to a joke falling flat.

Sally Nugent teased Carol Kirkwood and told her to "go take a nap" as the Scottish weather forecaster appeared on the early morning BBC show in person rather than her usual video link cameos.

Jon Kay, 53, joined Sally, 51, on the red sofa this morning as the BBC Breakfast presenting duo discussed a new study from University College London which suggests napping could be beneficial for brain health.

As the duo chatted about the study's findings, Jon revealed his co-host advised him to get used to napping on a regular basis when he bagged his BBC Breakfast gig last year.

"I tried to resist it," Jon admitted before Sally quipped: "Got to nap. It does work, doesn't it?"

But Jon went on to reveal to BBC viewers that Carol isn't a fan of treating herself to a little daytime nap - something that caused Sally to dub the weather expert "a rebel".

"I don't nap, it makes me feel sick, but now I'm thinking 'maybe that's what's gone wrong'! If it makes you look younger," Carol confessed as she caught up with Jon and Sally in the studio.

"Your brain is very healthy," Sally told Carol as the two women laughed.

"Oh bless you, I don't care what anyone else thinks," Carol replied before launching into her weather report.

However, ahead of letting viewers what kind of weather to expect over the coming days, Carol admitted she had tried to make a joke that had gone over Jon and Sally's head.

"Oh were you?" Sally replied to Carol's admission, with a confused Jon adding: "What, about the weather?"

Nap fan Sally then couldn't pass up on the opportunity to make a joke herself, telling meteorologist Carol: "I think you need to go and have a nap! Carol, maybe go and have a little nap and see how you feel after."

Preventing her lighthearted quip from being interrupted as a dig, Sally quickly added: "It's great having you here" and told her co-host: "Isn't it great, having Carol here?" to which Jon agreed.

The research BBC Breakfast discussed this morning comes from a University College London study which found small naps throughout the day can be good for overall brain health.

Researchers hope their findings will reduce the stigma attached to getting some shuteye during the day but recommends naps are kept to less than half an hour.

"Our findings suggest that, for some people, short daytime naps may be a part of the puzzle that could help preserve the health of the brain as we get older," Dr Victoria Garfield, of the MRC Unit for Lifelong Health & Ageing at UCL, explained.
