Netflix has revealed the eagerly-awaited trailer for the a disturbing new reality TV series based on the hit dystopian South Korean drama Squid Game.

In case you missed it the first time around, Squid Game is a survival drama where 456 debt-ridden people are handpicked to compete in a game where they could win a life-changing ₩45.6 billion (US$35 million, €33 million, or £29 million at the time of broadcast) reward.

However, the twist is soon to be revealed that those who do not pass each round are literally eliminated in a number of gruesome ways.

When it was released in 2021 the dystopian South Korean drama series was described as the streaming giant’s “biggest TV show ever”.

Following its success, Netflix announced it would be bringing the show to life and it has now released the teaser for Squid Game: The Challenge, which is set to be released in November.

Inspired by the original show, it all takes place in a warehouse which is used to construct an elaborate set where contestants battle through a series of games.

The 10-part competition will see entrants try to win a prize of 4.56 million dollars (£3,736,054) as they are seen being watched by a similar doll to the South Korean series while wearing comparable green tracksuits.

Just like in the murderous television show, there will be 456 real players entering the game – and in each round contestants are eliminated when their strategies, alliances and characters are put to the test.

However, the streamer confirmed when it announced the show in 2022 that the players will not face the deadly consequences of the drama series, and their worst fate will be going home empty-handed.

After watching the trailer on social media, many viewers were left confused over what the 'deadly' stunts will be like.

One person wrote: "Will the contestants live afterwards?"

"Can someone explain the "becomes reality" thing...I'm confused lol," joked someone else.

While someone else commented: "There's something really weird when a show about massive economic equality exploited for folks entertainment, spawns an actually gameshow to make money for corpos..."

Netflix also announced at Tudum 2023: A Netflix Global Fan Event in Sao Paulo, Brazil, that The Acolyte star Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-Hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo would be returning for season two of the show Squid Game.

It also teased new cast member from South Korean boy band ZE:A singer Yim Si-Wan, actors Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-Hoon, and rapper, record producer and actor Yang Dong-Geun will also be starring as new players.
