Alphonso Davies feels as though he's "stuck" as Bayern Munich's left-back with his ambition still to play further forward.

The Canadian has been a key figure for the Bavarians in recent years, helping them claim the treble back in 2020 as they swept all before them. Davies played left-back in the Champions League final victory and that is a position he still finds himself in, despite being promised other opportunities.

Bayern saw one of their modern greats, Arjen Robben, leave the club in 2019 after a decade at the Allianz Arena. The Dutchman was a hugely influential figure, scoring 144 times, and Davies, who is known for his lightning pace and trickery, was signed as his replacement.

Injuries meant he had to fill in elsewhere, but that has since become his regular position, which is not what he'd hope from his time at Bayern. He told German podcast : "I was signed to replace Arjen Robben and when David Alaba got injured, I was then used as a full-back. And now, three, four years later, I'm stuck there."

The Canadian admits he's "waiting for the chance to play further forward" but does not expect it to come anytime soon. He's worked under the likes of Hansi Flick, Julian Nagelsmann and now Thomas Tuchel. All of whom have opted to keep him as part of the defensive structure.

Davies himself has been linked with a switch to Real Madrid, although the Bavarians want to tie him down to an extension. His agent, Nedal Huoseh, has told on the player's future: “We were almost there I think, I was in Munich, and I woke up the next day… And I saw all the news, that they [Kahn and Salihamidzic] had been sacked. I waited for a couple of extra days and nobody had reached out, so I jumped on a plane to Canada. Right now we haven’t made any decisions on anything, and he is part of the Bayern team. We can’t confirm anything, and we can’t deny anything.”

He also added: “I’ve always been a big fan of Real Madrid, as a fan in general, you know 14 Champions Leagues. It makes you proud when you see someone you manage linked with Real Madrid."

Bayern are in the midst of a transition as they look to make some marquee signings to ensure they can regularly challenge on the Champions League stage again. Several big names could be moved on as the club seek a new No 9 this summer.

Tuchel managed to retain the Bundesliga title in dramatic circumstance on the final day as Borussia Dortmund, who went into the last matchday as league leaders, spurned their opportunity. Bayern though did fall short in the German Cup and in Europe, where they were beaten by Manchester City.
