A gran has tragically died in a house fire in a suburb during the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services were called to reports of a blaze on the ground floor of a two-storey building in Luton, Bedfordshire, at around 3.24am.

The ground floor was entirely damaged by fire and the first floor had been completely damaged by smoke.

The 90-year-old woman was declared dead at the scene in the Runfold area of the town.

Speaking this morning, a source close to the family told Mirror: "We are devastated. It is very unfortunate."

The incident was attended by crews from Luton, Stopsley and Leighton Buzzard.

The fire was extinguished at 4am and investigators remain at the scene to work to fully determine the cause of the blaze.

The victim lived alone in the property, it is understood.

A statement from Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue said: "Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service were called this morning (14/06) at around 03:24am to reports of a domestic house fire on Dewsbury Road, Luton. The fire was located on the ground floor of a two-storey building.

"The ground floor was entirely damaged by fire and the first floor had been entirely damaged by smoke.

"Unfortunately, one 85-year-old woman sadly lost her life. Our thoughts go out to all the family, friends, and community around the individual."
