It's no hidden fact that the price of tech gadgets has skyrocketed over the last few years, with the standard smartphone now costing an average of £900 to buy brand new. One tech site is selling discounted devices from Apple, Samsung and Xbox with savings up to as much as £600.

It's called BackMarket, a place dedicated to selling some of the latest iPhone, Google Pixel, and Galaxy S devices (to name a few) for a fraction of the price. After covering some of the recent 2023 tech launches on the Mirror tech team, it's common for new handsets to reach as much as £1,749 each like the Google Pixel Fold, but prices on the site average at around £300.

You may be wondering how the devices are sold with a massive discount, and it's all down to its stock of refurbished second-hand models, labelled to be sold as almost 'as good as new'. It's here where we've found models iPhone models for £120 and some Samsung Galaxy models under £200.

Those buying a second-hand phone will want to ensure the quality is of a high standard, especially as tech released from brands including Apple updates each year, not all models on the site will be compatible with the latest iOS software for instance. It may take an added amount of scrolling but there are models which only came out last year available to buy for £600 less than the current retail price.

Shoppers looking for a relatively new device can find the 5G S22 Ultra for £530, as opposed to its current retail price of £1,149 from the likes of Samsung, O2 and John Lewis. The discounted price is for a 'fair' second-hand device, but there's also the option for shoppers to buy an 'excellent' quality refurbished model for £600 (still £549 cheaper than the brand-new price).

Similar to fellow refurbished sites, like Amazon Warehouse, BackMarket rates its products in line with the design and features quality, so shoppers know what to expect with their second-hand purchase. The cheapest S22 model priced at £530 is in 'fair' condition but, as the site states, shoppers should expect a few noticeable scratch marks on the casing.

For £70 more shoppers could buy the Galaxy S22 model in 'excellent' refurbished condition for £600, with a screen in 'perfect condition and body with micro-scratches, not noticeable from 20cm away'.

As well as the 2022 Galaxy S22 range we've spotted a handful of second-hand models on the site we'd say are worth taking a look at, ideal for those looking to save money on a new phone but still get a modern handset.

Our next top pick is the Google Pixel 7Pro, which was only launched in the UK in the Autumn 2022 and is one of Google's latest handsets behind the Google Pixel 7a. The Pixel 7Pro model currently costs £849 for tech shoppers at the online Google checkout, £245 more expensive than BackMarket's £604 price.

The iPhone 11 is another one added to our list, although release four years ago it's still supported by the latest IOS software, despite a few physical design differences the model will work relatively the same to the latest iPhone 14. The 64GB iPhone 11 is now £222 on BackMarket compared to the £429 price on Amazon.
