Ben Foster debunks Ryan Reynolds theory at Soccer Aid - "completely untrue"
Ben Foster has shot down any suggestion he and Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds are best mates.
The former Manchester United, Watford and West Brom goalkeeper signed a fresh one-year deal with Wrexham on Friday, after helping the Welsh side to promotion from the National League. Foster, who came out of retirement to join the side as emergency cover for the injured Rob Lainton, played eight games and kept three clean sheets.
Foster was expected to return to retirement but has now committed another year to the Red Dragons and will ply his trade in League 2. During the course of Wrexham's promotion surge, Foster's relationship with the owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, seemed to be an incredibly healthy one.
The 40-year-old's friendship with the Deadpool star in particular seemed incredibly close, with the latter occasionally appearing in the shot-stopper's well known YouTube videos. Reynolds even gatecrashed a press conference in order to take Foster's match worn shirt off him on another occasion.
Reynolds had also promised Foster a prop from his Deadpool film, willing to give the goalkeeper one of the character's iconic gloves. Foster recalled: "He text me yesterday and said, 'I forgot to tell you what it is. I was going through my memorabilia the other day of Deadpool, and I found the original gloves that I wore in the film.' The Deadpool gloves, his whole outfit's pretty famous, really, isn't it?
Ryan Reynolds mispronounces name of new Wrexham signing in hilarious video"And he said, 'I gave one of the gloves to a guy with terminal cancer the other day, but the other one I wanna give to you... because I see you give your gloves away all the time and you never get given back in return'. And I was like, 'Mate!' I am buzzing so much for this.
"This is going in a frame in the Foster household, like you wouldn't believe!"
But despite all of that, Foster has claimed the pair are not best mates. The goalkeeper gave his reply during this year's Soccer Aid, when he was mic'd up for an interview with commentator Iain Stirling. The Love Island voiceover star kept referring to Reynolds as Foster's best mate throughout the interview but the Wrexham star eventually cut him off.
"I will take that all day long," replied Foster. "It is completely untrue but I am taking it"
Ben Foster was in goal for the World XI team who sailed into a 1-0 lead thanks to world record sprinter Usain Bolt. England pegged back their opponents at Old Trafford through Sex Education star Asa Butterfield before Paul Scholes added a second. Foster, at this point, had been replaced by UFC fighter Leon Edwards. The World XI did however run out 4-2 winners in the end.
