The moment a paddleboarder realised two enormous basking sharks were swarming directly underneath him has been captured on camera.

Adventurer Joshua Nueva was paddling in the waters of Keem Bay, in Achill Island Co Mayo, when he had the unusual encounter.

The young man explained in a post on Instagram that while he was out in the bay, he noticed something close to him, Galway Beo reports.

In an incredible video also shared on social media, Joshua captured the two sharks underwater as they were swimming just below his paddleboard.

Joshua could not believe his eyes as he said nothing can fully describe how “colossal” these animals are in person.

Joshua wrote along the video: “You never know what’s below you.

"Been enjoying the sun on my paddleboard this bank holiday weekend and these two gentle giants popped up while I was out paddling at Keem Bay, Co. Mayo.

"They were bigger than my 10 foot board, so I’m guessing they were between 14-16 feet long, crazy. Words/videos can’t fully describe how colossal these sharks are in person.”

Under the post, many commented on his amazing encounter.

One said: “Wow, great to see so many of them back in our waters!”

Another wrote: “Yes! I spotted them too from the shore. Just a glimpse of their fins, but amazing to witness.”

A third added: “I know they’re gentle, but they look so huge and prehistoric I’d be absolutely bricking it!!!”
