A woman has been left outraged after being banned from a cat lovers' Facebook group after members deemed her pet's name "offensive". She explained how she joined a cat-related Facebook group after welcoming a black feline in to her home, wanting to chat with likeminded people and share pictures of her precious pet.

However, she ended up being booted out without warning after casually revealing his name. The woman said: "I got banned from cat Facebook groups simply because his name is Lucifer." She has taken to the subreddit black cats - where she has not yet been banned over her pet's name - to vent her frustrations over their 'stupid' rules.

"Lady Tremaine [the wicked stepmother in Cinderella] has a cat named Lucifer. You'd be surprised how many people also forget Lucifer was an Angel," she added.

While most users couldn't help but laugh at her ban, other slammed members of the Facebook group for being "petty" and "overreactive".

One user said: " Lucifer is quite the handsome kitty and Facebook is ugly and doesn't know what it's missing."

Another user added: "That's insane. Lucifer is a pretty popular name for cats from what I've seen. The cat in the Disney Cinderella cartoon was named Lucifer.

"Maybe you can tell the pearl-clutchers his name is LooseFur or Losethefur. I could name all of my cats that because they’re shedding like crazy."

A third user said: "Lucifer is beautiful. My girl is named Mazikeen so I would also be banned."

In classic mythology, Lucifer is the morning star - otherwise the planet Venus at dawn - personified into a male figure bearing a torch.

However, in Christian times, Lucifer came to be regarded as Satan before his fall.

However, she isn't the only pet owner who has come under fire after naming her cat Lucifer, as another woman was ordered to change her pet's name after her neighbour deemed it inappropriate.

The cat owner explained how she named her two-year-old cat Lucifer after getting hooked on the urban fantasy television series which stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer.

She said: "I have recently moved in to an apartment with my boyfriend and my two-year-old black cat, Lucifer. Despite naming him Lucifer we also call him Lucy and Lulu.

"Some of the friendly neighbours visited our place with gifts as a welcome gesture and it did not take long for us to know that one seven-year-old [in the neighbourhood] is also named Lucy."

After hearing about them moving into the area, the seven-year-old's mum, who was yet to introduce herself to the couple, marched round to their house to order them to change their pet's name.

"The mother, who did not visit our place before and probably heard from the other neighbours, has been knocking our door asking us to change the name of our cat," she added on Reddit.

"[She wants us to change it] because they are Christians, and linking my cat name Lucifer, which we also nickname Lucy to their daughter Lucy is offensive."

Shocked by her request, the woman quickly shot her down saying she would not be changing her cat's name for those reasons.

However, her neighbour became so upset by this that even the woman's boyfriend started considering changing the animal's name.

She added: "The neighbour is getting rather upset over this and even my boyfriend said that changing Lucifer's name is not a big deal, we could even lie to her that we have already changed his name.

"I said, 'No, why should I change my cat's name or lie about him changing names when it is really none of her business? I don't want to give in to her over such silly reasons'."

While most users agreed she shouldn't change her pet's name to appease her new neighbour, others shared their shock over the mum ordering a name change in the first place.
