It is an absolute disgrace that Covid inquiry chair Heather Hallett has been sucked into a legal battle with ministers over the release of WhatsApp messages.

After being appointed by the Government with extensive powers, the mere suggestion that the independent peer and former Court of Appeal judge could be forced to resign if denied what might possibly be crucial evidence is damning for the Tories.

What do they have to hide? The British people deserve the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth with the experienced Lady Hallett more than capable of screening out irrelevant personal information when her team combs through private chats.

Obstructing and undermining the Covid inquiry is a dangerous game for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his team to play because the bereaved families, people still suffering with Long Covid and the rest of us who endured the pandemic would never forgive them.

PM rudderless

Trying to solve the small boats crisis by shoving people fleeing war and poverty in bigger boats is the work of a desperate PM stuck up a creek without a paddle.

Rishi Sunak’s refusal to say where another two barges to house a thousand refugees, asylum seekers and desperate migrants will be moored reflects the Government’s make-it-up-as-we-go-along strategy.

The numbers that will be housed are small compared to those crossing the Channel.

Whether a dip in arrivals is due to fresh policies or, more likely, the weather is a debate that will be settled later.

But only the gullible believe the Tories have a grip on this issue.

Sue’s got talent

Britain's Got Talent fans may be divided over winner Viggo Venn – but they are united in their support for Susan Boyle.

The BGT legend returned after suffering from a stroke and proved she is still one of the most inspirational stars the show has discovered.
