It was hailed as the next Euphoria, but HBO's The Idol starring Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd has since been branded twisted "torture porn".

The gritty drama sees Johnny Depp's daughter star as a glamorous but troubled pop star, while musician The Weeknd plays the part of a slimy cult leader.

The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, joined forces with director Sam Levinson for the series and they have been described as having "sick and twisted minds" to think of the storylines.

HBO labelled the series the "sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood" ahead of its release which is being billed as a darker, crazier, and more risqué version of Levinson’s popular series Euphoria.

Despite initially being scheduled for release in November 2021, the show was delayed and released today.

But in its anticipated build-up, a number of production sources have opened up on just what fans can expect from the show - and why there has been such a delay.

It's said that Sam taking over as director saw the nearly-finished $54-75 million project scrapped and rewritten as well as being reshot. and reshoot the entire thing with insiders claiming it was "kind of a joke" at how many changes were made.

Some believe that his input weakened the show’s overarching message as he decided to dial up the disturbing sexual content and nudity to rival his Euphoria success.

One insider told Rolling Stone : "What I signed up for was a dark satire of fame and the fame model in the 21st century."

However, they claimed: "It went from satire to the thing it was satirizing."

Other sources added their thoughts, saying: "It was like any rape fantasy that any toxic man would have in the show — and then the woman comes back for more because it makes her music better."

And a third said they couldn't believe what they were reading with the new script, calling it "like sexual torture porn".

Elsewhere, a source said they didn't actually see Levinson on set until a few weeks into his production. Despite this being the case, they said he was "approachable" from the outset.

The opinion differed from another source who claimed: "I went into The Idol thinking that this might be an interesting collaboration, but I left it pretty convinced that [Levinson] is not quite collaborative."

The Mirror has reached out for comment.

Despite some less than positive comments, Depp insisted Levinson was "the best director" she has worked with to date and explained to the publication how she felt her opinions were "more valued".
