Tributes have flooded in for a grandmother who was mauled to death by a dog while sunbathing.

The victim, who was in her 70s, was declared dead at the scene in Bedworth, Warwickshire, on Friday afternoon.

Warwickshire Police arrested a 52-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of possession of a banned breed of dog and owning a dog dangerously out of control. The man has since been released on bail.

The woman was also taken to the hospital suffering non-life-threatening injuries related to the dog and has since been discharged and released on bail.

Today a police car was parked outside the home as police carry out reassurance patrols.

Another added: "They are a lovely family. Three generations live in the house. It's a terrible thing to have happened."

A 78-year-old woman, who wished to remain anonymous, told CoventryLive : “It is not nice. My thoughts are with them all.

"It is a terrible tragedy. It is really sad. We do not normally have things like this happen, not around here anyway.”

Another local said: “I think it is horrifying wherever it happens. It is terrifying.”

A third said: “I was shocked when I heard that a woman had died after being attacked by a dog. It is really upsetting.”

This attack comes as the Mirror is campaigning to overhaul the Dangerous Dogs Act as Brits continue to be killed or seriously injured in vicious dog attacks

Our demands are a review of the Dangerous Dogs Act, to enforce the rules to stop the illegal and irresponsible breeding and selling of dogs and a public information campaign to promote the importance of responsible dog ownership and the need for training.

Officers have now contained and seized the animal to a secure facility and stressed there is no ongoing risk to the wider community.

Superintendent Sutherland Lane said: “This was a tragic isolated incident, and a full investigation is now underway to establish the circumstances surrounding it. Thankfully dog attacks of this nature are exceedingly rare, but I recognise this will be deeply upsetting for the local community.

“The public can expect to see a heightened police presence in and around the area while we conduct our enquiries. Please do come and speak to one of our officers if you have any information that could help with our investigation.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information has been asked to report it to Warwickshire Police by calling 101.
