Pedro Pascal has spoken about some of the reaction he received over his role in Game of Thrones, seemingly saying that he once got an eye infection because of a selfie request.

The actor, 48, rose to prominence on the popular HBO series when he played Oberyn Martell in the fourth season, which was first broadacast almost a decade ago back in 2014.

Oberyn was killed off in the eighth episode during a graphic scene in which the character had his eyes gouged out and his skull crushed by Gregor 'The Moutain' Clegane.

The reaction to the role was discussed by Pedro in a roundtable conversation with other actors recently, including Succession's Kieran Culkin and Snowfall's Damson Idris.

The Hollywood Reporter 's latest roundtable conversation began with moderator Lacey Rose having asked the group about the reactions that they receive from fans.

Pedro recalled: "I remember early because of Game of Thrones and the way that my character died [...] people were super into taking selfies with their thumbs in my eyes".

The actor explained during the discussion that he had initially obliged to the requests but suggested it came to an end after he developed a "bit of an eye infection" once.

He said: "At first, I was so kind of earnest and happy about the success of the character in the show and I would let them!" He then teased about it: "In New York, of all places!"

Pedro continued by telling the moderator and the other guests on the panel alongside him: "And then I remember getting a little bit of an eye infection and then it stopped".

Damson, 31, jokingly placed his thumbs up towards Pedro's face, with the actor then teasing that "it's coming back" and Kieran, 40, teased his glasses are protection.

Pedro was seemingly revealing that he developed the eye infection because fans were putting their thumbs in his eyes and that it subsequently put others off doing so.

However it's unclear whether the eye infection was unrelated and if he was simply mentioning it as the cause of why fans stopped asking for selfies with their thumbs in his eyes.

Following his role on Game of Thrones, the actor has appeared in various other high-profile projects including having played Javier Peña in Netflix show Narcos from 2015 to 2017.

He was later cast in a leading role with the Stars Wars franchise, having now played the titular character in the Disney Plus series The Mandalorian since it debuted in 2019.

More recently, he's received acclaim for his portrayal of Joel Miller in the first season of the HBO adaptation of video game The Last of Us, which premiered in January this year.
