Coronation Street fans spotted a big blunder during a recent episode of the ITV soap which had social media viewers in hysterics.

Viewers of the programme are no strangers when it comes to instantly picking up on continuity errors but it appears their eagle eyes have spotted a shopping error.

In 2018 it was announced that the Weatherfield-based soap would be expanding, adding a Costa Coffee and Co-op store to the set as part of a new product placement deal.

But while the soap which is filmed in MediaCity UK, Salford, has a Co-op, it also has the local convenience store, Dev's corner shop as well as supermarket Frescho, it appears another has made it into the mix.

During an episode which aired last week, fans noticed that David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) was purchasing Garlic and Herb Chicken Kievs from Dev's while Evelyn Plummer (Dame Maureen Lipman ) was behind the till.

But as Evelyn lifted the crispy dinner treat up to scan it, fans spotted that it was branded with the Aldi logo – revealing that it was purchased from the cost-efficient supermarket chain.

The logo of the supermarket was visible for all to see for the product which the German supermarket sells for £1.99.

Fans instantly took to Twitter to share their reactions, with one writing: "Not Coronation Street selling ALDI chicken kievs in Dev’s shop. Thought their product placement deal was with Co-Op," alongside a string of laughing emojis.

"Maybe it was in a good-to-go magic bag," joked a second.

While a third added: "I bet he’s selling cans from a multipack separately as well. Bloody cheek."

But Aldi who are known for their quick wit after becoming embroiled in a long-standing feud with M&S Food replied: "Someone's in trouble and for once I don't think it's us."

A second tweet on their official Twitter page read: "They will be hearing from out lawyers (They won't, they lawyers are all getting therapy currently) -Diarmiad [sic]."

"Our lawyers need a break! -Diarmiad," read another tweet after one viewer joked that they should "sue" Coronation Street.

ITV struck a deal with Costa and Co-op back in 2018 which would also allow the chains to use the soap assets off-air.

At the time, ITV's sales director Mark Trinder said: "Incorporating product placement on this scale is something we have wanted to do for some time and we’re delighted with this exciting opportunity.

"We've worked really closely with the Coronation Street team to make sure we've got a great brand fit for Co-op and Costa Coffee with the nation's favourite soap while still ensuring editorial integrity."
