Sam Smith has announced they will be cancelling further performances following their concert in Manchester being unexpectedly cut short on Wednesday night.

Rescheduled shows set to take place in Birmingham and Glasgow have been postponed, with fans with tickets to the gigs being offered refunds.

The Stay With Me singer left the stage at the AO Arena after just four songs, leaving fans in the crowd wondering what was going on and suspecting a power cut or technical issue had occurred.

However, Sam took to Instagram a few hours later and apologised to their fans, explaining an issue with their voice was the reason behind the abrupt early finish to their show.

The statement shared on the Unholy singer's Instagram Stories reads: "Due to vocal issues during last night's Manchester performance, regrettably we will be cancelling the rescheduled Birmingham and Glasgow Sam Smith shows.

"Refunds will be available at point of purchase for all three dates; Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow.

"A spokesperson said, 'Doctors have advised due to vocal chord injury, Sam must have complete vocal rest.'

"'Sam is heartbroken to have had to cancel these shows but they have been told by doctors that if they keep singing, they will do permanent damage to their voice. If they take some rest they will be able to perform again.'"

When sharing the statement to their 14.7million followers on Instagram, Sam added: "I'm so sorry [heartbroken emoji]."

Sam Smith's gig in Manchester ended abruptly on Wednesday night, leaving fans confused, angry and worried about the award-winning singer.

While many have been sharing their concerns for Sam's mental health amid the drama, others have been left wondering if they will receive a refund due to the 'terrifying' experience.

One concert goer took to social media to slam Sam for leaving the stage so suddenly - claiming she was left anxious and scared in the dark with her 13-year-old daughter, not knowing what was going on.

One remarked: "What a massive shame! Take care Sam Smith you did sound amazing!" And another added: "Absolute bummer. Hope Sam Smith is well nonetheless and ready to perform again soon at full health!"

"I understand the fans' disappointment and sadness but this is not Sam's fault, please be kind with them. I can't imagine how hard would be for them not to be able to do what they were born to. Get well soon @samsmith," someone else tweeted.

Sam went on to share a lengthy statement on social media, revealing they "noticed something wrong with my voice" while belting out their third song of the evening.

Their original statement reads: "I don't know what to say honestly. I fought off a virus a few weeks ago and since then we have travelled across Europe and had such incredible shows.

"Today in soundcheck I felt fine and was so excited to give Manchester an amazing show tonight, with a special surprise guest at the end."

The star continued: "During my third song, I noticed something wrong with my voice. I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show but into the fourth song I could feel something was really wrong.

"I came off stage and have tried everything to get my voice back in gear but it won't. I am honestly heartbroken I couldn't finish the show tonight for you all. I love you all. I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry".
