Sam Smith fans fumed at a journalist for misgendering the singer while reporting from the red carpet at last night's star-studded Grammy Awards.

Held in Los Angeles, the glitzy ceremony saw A-list stars from all over the music industry come together for a night of celebration – including the Stay With Me hitmaker.

Sam, who uses they/them pronouns arrived at the awards bash with their Unholy co-star Kim Petras, along with Gottmik and Violet Chachki from RuPaul’s Drag Race.

The made a bold entrance and walked elegantly down the carpet after they walked into the Crypto.com Arena, formerly known as the Staples Center - entourage in tow.

It was as they walked past that a reporter said: "Sam Smith has had a lot of controversy around his outfits this past year, I love that he’s continuing to push the mould.

"Love that he’s continuing to break out from the Sam Smith that we knew at the ballads.

"He’s still singing those ballads, but he’s definitely diving fully in, into pop music, and we can see that, not only in his music, but also in his looks as well"

It didn't long for eagle-eyed fans to react to the misgendering taking place, with one person saying: "Everyone using the wrong pronouns for Sam Smith is bothering me."

Another said: "Someone tell the reporters to use the right pronouns for Sam Smith !!!!"

Sam came out as non-binary and gender queer in 2019. It was in an interview earlier this year they explained changing their pronouns "felt like coming home".

"Since changing my pronouns, it felt like a coming home. I wish I knew what the words were when I was in school, because I would’ve identified as that in school," they told Zane Lowe.

"Because it is who I am and it’s who I’ve always been."

It comes after Sam's raunchy new music video to their new track I'm Not Here To Make Friends sparked furious debate online.

While some have moaned that it is "hyper-sexualised", others have argued that the Gloria hitmaker is simply being authentic and finally fully embracing their sexuality.

Some critics have called for the video, which features Sam dancing in a corset and suspenders with nipple covers, to be age restricted on platforms such as YouTube by claiming it "normalises pornography".
