'Heartbroken' Sam Smith released a statement after their gig in Manchester was cancelled at the last minute due to voice issues.

The Unholy singer, who teased a collaboration with Madonna, was performing at the AO Arena on Wednesday night when things went south.

During the performance, a power cut suddenly plunged the entire place into darkness.

Shocked fans revealed they were told to return to the foyer as they shared their experiences on social media.

Sam's gig ended after only three songs and they later took to social media to reveal something was 'really wrong' with their voice.

"I don't know what to say honestly. I fought off a virus a few weeks ago and since then we have travelled across Europe and had such incredible shows. Today in soundcheck I felt fine and was so excited to give Manchester an amazing show tonight, with a special surprise guest at the end," they said.

"During my third song, I noticed something wrong with my voice. I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show but into the fourth song I could feel something was really wrong.

"I came off stage and have tried everything to get my voice back in gear but it won't. I am honestly heartbroken I couldn't finish the show tonight for you all. I love you all. I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry".

At the time, fans took to social media to share their confusion.

One confused fan questioned: "Sam Smith at AO Arena, Manchester has been PAUSED!! What is going on?"

"Sam Smith at Manchester. Show paused. Announcement to return to foyers or restrooms," another tweeted.

Some fans said Sam had an issue with their voice.

A user said: "Sam Smith had a surprise for us tonight. It was meant to be Madonna!!! However after 3-4 songs the show got cancelled due to voice problems. If it is or isn’t, I just hope they are ok and come back to Manchester soon."

"Does anyone know what actually happened at sam smith tonight? i was there and im still not certain what’s actually gone on," another questioned.

Mirror have contacted Sam's representatives for comment.

The sudden cancellation comes after they cancelled a previous concert.

At the end of April, they apologised to fans after being forced to cancel another concert due to a mystery illness.

The 30-year-old revealed they would not be able to perform at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham as they and their team were unwell.

Taking to their Instagram Stories, the Stay With Me musician apologised to fans and revealed tickets are still valid for the new concert date.

Sam's gig cancellation comes after they pulled out of performing at the OVO Hydro Arena in Glasgow over the weekend.

"Sailors, I am so sorry to let you know that my team and I are still really not well, so unfortunately we need to reschedule out Birmingham show to the 27th of May 2023," Sam wrote.

"It's so important to me that we give you the very best version of Gloria. I don't want you to experience it at anything less."
