An 11-year-old girl tragically died after fainting and hitting her head in the bathroom, her family said.

Falaq Babar passed away in the hospital on March 18 last year, weeks after the incident, her mum Shazia Bi said.

The girl, from Rochdale, Greater Manchester, was described as a "beautiful soul" who "will always stay in our hearts and thoughts forever".

Her heartbroken mum paid tribute to Falaq, saying the family was lucky to have her, during her short life.

She said: "How lucky we were to have Falaq in our lives for a short time, but she has left us with so many memories and love.

"We all cherished her, and she will always stay in our hearts and thoughts forever.

"Mum, dad, and brother will never forget you. We as a family cannot come to terms with the loss of such a beautiful soul. We love you, Falaq."

The family said Falaq tragically became unwell after fainting and hitting her head in the bathroom.

An inquest into Falaq's death was formally opened by area coroner Catherine McKenna on Tuesday.

At the inquest opening, police coroner's officer Ms Tracy Bunn said Falaq was admitted to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital after being brought in by her family after "complaining of feeling unwell".

"She began to vomit and became unresponsive," Ms Bunn said.

A CT scan was done and Falaq underwent emergency surgery, but she later passed away, the court heard.

The provisional cause of death was determined by forensic pathologist Dr Philip Lumb as hypnotic anoxic brain injury.

Area coroner McKenna said: "I am here this morning to open the inquest into the death of a young girl. I am really sorry you have lost your daughter this way."

A date for the full inquest will be fixed at a later date.
