Florist shares 'three day' rule to make Valentine's Day flowers last longer

If you're lucky enough to have received some gorgeous Valentine's Day flowers yesterday, you're probably going to want them to stay fresh for as long as possible.

It's easy to think that you just need to dump them in a vase with water and leave them to be marvelled at, but there's actually something you can actively do to make them last longer.

Florist Freddie Garland, founder of Freddie's Flowers, has shared how he extends the life of flowers with a genius hack that has to be done every three days.

According to the florist, it's not enough to just put your beautiful flowers into a vase and leave it there, you need to change the water and trim the stems every three days.

Freddie told The Mirror: "As a florist, I've picked up all the essential tricks and tips to help your flowers last that extra bit longer. To start, change the water and trim the stems every three days – this will help your flowers to stay hydrated and looking their best for longer."

Sometimes some stems will last longer, but that doesn't mean you have to throw away the whole bunch.

Freddie said: "Make sure you take out longer-lasting stems when it's time, and place them in smaller vases, to really get the most out of them – adding more colour and texture to different corners of your home."

The florist also recommends making "the most of the lateral stems on your flowers too," which are the parts that grows off from the flower itself. Freddie said: "Trim these off and place them in bud vases for an extra decorative addition to your dining table."

Lastly, Freddie said that the best way to make your flowers last longer is by pressing or drying them.

He said: "If you want to make them last EVEN longer, dry or press them – they'll last forever and act as the perfect gift for loved ones!"

There are many things you can do to extend the life of your flowers, according to experts.

Flower sellers from the famous Columbia Road Flower Market in London previously shared their top tip, which is dropping a 2p coin into the bottom of the vase before filling it with water.

We previously tried the hack with a bunch of pink tulips from M&S, with impressive results.

After a while, the slightly sad-looking blooms opened up and looked even better than before.
