Person killed and four injured after carjacking ends in horror bus stop crash

One person is dead and four people have been injured after a vehicle collided with a bus stop in San Francisco during a police pursuit.

The crash occurred when a truck collided with a stolen vehicle and one of them then careered into the stop near the intersection of 16th Street and Potrero Avenue.

Both vehicles were left severely damaged.

The glass of a nearby Safeway store was also shattered after the incident, reported at 10am local time.

It is not clear if the person who died was waiting for the bus at the time of the incident, or if they were in a car. Two of the victims of the accident were waiting for the bus when the crash happened.

One of the victims sadly died after they were taken to hospital.

The San Francisco Police Department allege a suspect carjacked the truck around a mile and a half away on Folsom Street and Mabini Street.

The force said the suspect vehicle led officers in a chase through the streets of San Francisco before the collision took place.

Police did not confirm the pursuit of the vehicle took place at high speeds.

The suspect, identified as a man, survived and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Nearby, the owner of Your New Barber, Hector Martinez, said he saw the devastating aftermath of the horror crash after hearing a noise that sounded like an "explosion".

"It sounded like an explosion almost, he said to missionlocal.com. "I ran outside and I saw chaos."

Mr Martinez said he saw the suspect in handcuffs sitting near the damaged bus stop after he was detained following a "physical struggle".

Horror pictures from the scene of the incident revealed a tragic scene. A person was seen on a stretcher in a neck brace as they were put into an ambulance.

The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management warned people to keep away from the area after the crash.

In a statement on Twitter, it said: "Avoid the area of 16th St and Potrero Ave due to Police Activity. Emergency crews are on scene.

"Expect traffic delays, consider alternate routes, and allow for additional travel time. "

The incident is under investigation by the SPFD.

Earlier this month eight people waiting at a bus stop in Brownsville, Texas were killed when a vehicle rammed the group.

The victims were reported to be migrants -Brownsville is a border town - local Police Chief Felix Sauceda said town resident George Alvarez, 34, faces eight counts of manslaughter.

He was also charged with 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and bail was set at $3.6million.

Eighteen people were hit, and 10 critically injured. All of the deceased victims were male and several were from Venezuela, according to Brownsville police, but so far none of their identities have been released.

Jesus Ferrer, 32, was lined up at the bus stop Sunday with a group of migrants, including some friends, when they noticed the vehicle driving in their direction.

“We spotted a grey SUV that was coming at full speed. It came toward us and veered toward us,” he said.

Ferrer said the driver tried to flee afterward, but the group stopped him.

He added that the man was furious and told those who detained him arrived to “'Go back to your country.'”
