Golden State set for another off-season departure amid Bob Myers uncertainty
The Golden State Warriors could potentially be set to lose two key members of their staff including one from the front office.
The reigning NBA Champions are set to lose that title after exiting the playoffs to the Los Angeles Lakers last week at the Western Conference semi-final stage.. That crown will go either to the Lakers, the Denver Nuggets, the Miami Heat or the Boston Celtics at the end of next month’s NBA Finals.
The Warriors have won four NBA titles over the last eight seasons, reaching the NBA Finals on six occasions including five in a row from 2015-2019. One key player at the heart of that is point guard Steph Curry, along with head coach Steve Kerr who was hired in 2014.
However, things could be about to change for the Warriors during the off-season. As a result it could mean that two key members of staff leave the franchise for new ventures.
The latest update concerns assistant coach Kenny Atkinson. According to ESPN, the Warriors assistant is one of three candidates to be shortlisted for the role as head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks.
LeBron James edges closer to NBA scoring record with jaw-dropping Lakers displayThe 2021 NBA Champions are searching for a new head coach after the exit of Mike Budenholzer after the playoff loss to the Heat. The report states that Atkinson is under consideration for the job, but he is not alone.
Also mentioned in the report is former Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse and current assistant coach Adrian Griffin. The report concludes by saying that all three coaches, including Atkinson, will be discussed by the Bucks leadership ahead of a final decision on who their new head coach will be.
This news comes just days after reports emerged that Warriors general manager Bob Myers could be heading for the exit door. It was reported by ESPN that Myers will take some time to think over his future in San Francisco.
Myers was one of the key figures in building the renowned dynasty at the Warriors over the last decade. However, his contract is due to expire during the off-season and there is yet to be any noise around an extension being offered or agreed.
Should Myers go on to leave the Warriors when his contract runs out, then he would likely be one of the most sought after free agents ahead of the 2023/24 season. There is still time for things to be sorted out before then, but while the situation remains quiet then the likelihood of a key Warriors front office member leaving becomes ever more likely.
