Joe Lycett £10k protest against David Beckham's Qatar deal nominated for award
The British LGBT Awards 2023 shortlist has been revealed, with Joe Lycett, Sue Perkins, Alex Scott, RuPaul Charles and Sir Rod Stewart all nominated for major honours later this year.
England Lionesses lead Sports Personality category as captain Leah Williamson, striker and Euro 2022 Golden Boot winner Beth Mead plus defender and I’m A Celebrity winner Jill Scott all in with a chance of taking home a gong in June.
But it's Joe's shortlisted nomination for Media Moment that's sure to get everyone talking when the star-studded ceremony takes place.
The former Sewing Bee host won praise as he captured the world’s attention last year when he threatened to shred £10,000 in cash unless football legend David Beckham cancelled his controversial deal with Qatar.

Beckham failed to respond to the threat and Lycett subsequently posted a video of himself shredding the money. It garnered unbelievable attention, only for Lycett to reveal that the money coming out of the shredder was fake and he had donated the cash to Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign and Sport Allies, before urging fans to give money if they could too

Elsewhere in the nominations for the British LGBT Awards, TV personality Alison Hammond, global actress Emma Watson, music superstar Harry Styles, RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage and acting royalty Sir Patrick Stewart, who are all nominated for the Celebrity Ally Award - a prize previously won by Alicia Keys and HRH Prince William.
Meanwhile, global music stars Anne-Marie and Lizzo will battle it out for the Paramount sponsored Music Artist of the Year gong alongside the likes of alternative artist Yungblud and rising star Rina Sawayama while Pose legend Billy Porter, The Crown star Emma Corrin and powerhouse actor Luke Evans will go head-to-head in the coveted Sky UK LGBT+ Celebrity of the Year accolade.

“It is more important than ever that we shine a light on those who have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the LGBT+ community, during what has been another very challenging 12 months for the community," Sarah Garrett, MBE, British LGBT Awards founder, said as the nominations were revealed.
“The nominees, which include an exciting mix of famous LGBT+ faces, allies and organisations have all demonstrated a commitment to advancing LGBT+ rights.
“The awards on 23 June will be a huge celebration of our culture and we’re so proud to continue championing the LGBT+ voice.”
