BBC Breakfast viewers hit out at the programme after host Naga Munchetty spoke to the chair of Water UK following the confirmation that raw sewage has spilled directly into the UK's seas and rivers.

On Thursday, Naga and Charlie Stayt told BBC Breakfast viewers that Water UK, a membership body representing the UK water industry, apologised on behalf of companies across England for not doing more to tackle the problem.

Water UK has claimed to invest £10billion over the next 10 years to help solve the issue and consequences of the problem.

Naga spoke to Ruth Kelly, chair of the membership body, to discuss the problem with the former MP claiming the water companies represented by Water UK "want to be held account" for the sewage spillages.

She said: "Later this summer, we'll publish a specific investment plan that will look overflow by overflow, all 15,000 across the country and say what investment is likely to take place and when it's likely to take place."

The former MP added this investment was also hoped to give the public "real confidence" of the companies' wish to make a difference.

Naga hit back at the BBC Breakfast guest resulting in the pair talking over each other as the host repeatedly fired questions at Ruth, unsatisfied with the chair's responses.

Some viewers were not impressed with Naga's interviewing technique while others slammed the chair of Water UK.

One viewer tweeted: "Naga not letting the water lady finish speaking is incredibly annoying #BBCBreakfast," while a second added: "I’m as angry as the next person at the behaviour of the water companies however Naga’s constant ‘gotcha’ approach here is falling flat on its face."

Another remarked: "Wow. Not sure I’ve seen an interview where two people are talking over each other quite so much! I’m assuming this woman used to be a Tory MP?."

However, another commented: "Nags asking which rivers might be clean in a year & the Chair of Water UK only hopes all of them. No specifics- no accountability for water companies As good as said the public just need to put up and shut up! #BBCBreakfast."

"#BBCBreakfast Get her off, it’s rubbish. Spouting facts figures, not credible," fumed a second and another said: "Blimey, water representative comes across with all the credibility of a Tory MP."
