has said Britain should become a world leader in safeguarding against the dangers of artificial intelligence - but also "exploit" the benefits.

The Prime Minister said the technology, which powers chatbots like ChatGPT, is "evolving quickly" and the Government needs to ensure regulations keep pace.

His remarks come after ministers launched an £100million expert taskforce in April responsible for accelerating the UK's capability in the sector.

It said at the time they wanted "safe and reliable foundation models".

And earlier this year the Tesla entrepreneur Elon Musk joined more than 1,000 experts in an open letter calling for a six-month pause on developing more powerful AI models.

"Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable," it said.

Speaking ahead of the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Mr Sunak said there were obvious benefits for the economy, society, and public services, if AI is used "safely" and "securely".

He added: "That has to be done safely and securely and with guardrails in place, and that has been our regulatory approach.

"We have put in place a regulatory approach that puts those guardrails in place, and sets out a set of frameworks and areas where we need to have guardrails so that we can exploit AI for its benefits".

The PM said he wants to make sure the regulation evolves alongside AI which "is evolving quickly", adding that the process "is going to involve co-ordination with our allies".

He continued: "We were discussing this in my session of the Council of Europe, we were discussing AI in particular, and you would expect it to form some of the conversations as well at the G7.

"I think that the UK has a track record of being in a leadership position and bringing people together, particularly in regard to technological regulation.

"You've seen that in the Online Safety Bill, right, that is another area of new regulation that we have put into place in response to new technology and how it is impacting our lives, and the world has looked to us and that bill as a kind of leading example of how to do it.

"And again, the companies themselves, in that instance as well, have worked with us and looked to us to provide those guardrails as they will do and have done on AI."
