We are failing those who care for us.

More than half the NHS nurses and midwives in England have suffered work-related stress in the last 12 months.

Tragically, a growing number have contemplated taking their own lives.

One mental health charity has reported a 62% rise in number of nurses who have attempted suicide.

What a damning indictment of how the Tories have failed to value our NHS staff.

Health Secretary Steve Barclay should ask himself why so many nurses are suffering burn out, low morale and poor mental health.

Then he would realise it is due to the struggle they face giving patients the care they need with fewer and fewer resources.

At the same time they worry about how they will feed their families because their wages have not kept place with inflation.

The NHS is the pride of Britain but the way we treat those who work in it shames us.

A big problem

Far too many people in Britain are overweight and it’s putting a strain on the overstretched NHS.

Rising obesity is leading to a surge in illnesses such as diabetes and preventing people from leading happy and fulfilling lives.

One in five 16 to 24-year-olds are overweight and nearly one in 10 are obese.

The approval of a weight-loss drug for teens is welcome – but it is no substitute for the best way of staying in shape: taking
exercise and eating more healthily.

That is easier said than done when leisure centres and pools close and it’s cheaper to buy processed food than fruit and vegetables.

It’s time we tackled the real barriers to creating a healthy nation.
