Rain deluge set to lash Brits as washout spring sparks flood warnings

The unsettled pattern to the weather will remain for the UK on Thursday, with a mixture of sun, showers, hail and thunder.

In what is quickly becoming something of a spring washout, most areas will see some rain throughout the day, while there remains one flood warning in place for England, in Devon, with a further 32 flood alerts. There are 11 alive flood alerts in Scotland.

Some parts of the country may get bombarded with hailstones, while thunderstorms are also a distinct possibility.

“Low pressure still dominates as we go through Thursday, which means further showers to come,” said BBC weather forecaster Louise Lear.

“Thursday will start off with some low cloud, but it will largely remain fine and dry early on. The sunshine will start to emerge, but showers will develop and become more widespread until well into the afternoon.”

Temperatures will remain quite cool in Scotland, from 10 to 13 degrees, while there will be highs of around 17 or 18 in England and Wales.

“If you dodge the showers and keep in the sun, it will remain relatively pleasant.”

Friday is also expected to be wet, with patchy rain and drizzle for eastern coasts, with showers in the south.

We are not even halfway through the month yet and some parts of the country have seen more rainfall than the May average, with Culdrose, on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall, already being battered by 75mm of rain, which is 21mm more than the average for the whole month.

Yeovilton, in Somerset, is 16mm above the average, while the Norfolk village of Tibbenham is 12mm up on the mean.

One notable exception is Loch Glascarnoch, in the Scottish highlands, which has seen just 7mm of rain in May, which is 95mm below the average.

Sunny spells for many through the day but with showers developing widely this afternoon, these heavy and thundery in places. Cloudy and murky conditions persisting for parts of northern Scotland.

Tonight:

Showers dying out through this evening. Low cloud and hill fog spreading inland overnight though remaining clearer in the west. Rain possible in the far southeast by dawn.

Friday:

Early cloud breaking with northern and western areas seeing the most prolonged sunny spells. Cooler with cloud more stubborn in the east. Outbreaks of rain moving across parts of England.
