Tom Holland has revealed that he has been sober for over a year, with him having added in an interview that he's learnt to recognise "triggers" in terms of his mental health.

The actor, 26, spoke about his mental health recently whilst promoting his latest project The Crowded Room, ahead of the new Apple TV+ series being released next month.

The psychological thriller explores the topic and the show is understood to star Tom as Danny Sullivan, whose life is unveiled following a fateful incident in 1979.

Tom - best known for playing Spider-Man/Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - has discussed the impact that the project had on him whilst promoting it recently.

Whilst discussing the show, Tom revealed that he's one year and four months sober, and shared that the project helped him recognise "triggers" and "things that stress [him] out".

It's believed that his sobriety is in reference to alcohol. Tom previously expressed interest in having "a week off" drinking whilst on Jimmy Kimmel Live! back in 2020.

Tom has now spoken about his experience on The Crowded Room, with Entertainment Weekly, telling the outlet that it was "unlike anything [he's] ever experienced before".

Tom said that whilst he's used to physical aspects of acting, he found the mental aspect of the project challenging. He said: "It really beat me up and it took a long time for me to recover afterwards, to sort of get back to reality".

The show - which he has also co-produced - however altered how the actor views his own mental health, the outlet reports whilst mentioning the length of his sobriety.

"Learning about mental health and the power of it, and speaking to psychiatrists about [the character's] struggles, has been something that has been so informative to my own life," he said.

Tom said this is especially true when it comes to "recognising triggers" and "things that stress [him] out," with social media cited as an example in the recent interview.

He's previously spoken about social media being "detrimental to his mental state," sharing his thoughts when he announced that he was taking a break from it last year.

He said at the time that he found it "overstimulating" and "overwhelming," with him adding: "I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online".

During his recent interview, Tom expressed hope that viewers of his new miniseries will have more "respect and sympathy" for those who are "going through mental health issues".

He added that he hopes viewers will feel educated about mental health, including "the powers" of it and "the struggles," as well as about the our "abilities to survive."
