Murder detectives questioned serial killer Levi Bellfield for a second day as they probed as many as five unsolved crimes.

Scotland Yard officers yesterday continued their prison interview of Milly Dowler’s murderer, 54, following claims he penned a confession to a string of offences.

Central to the investigation is the disappearance of 19-year-old student Elizabeth Chau who vanished 24 years ago as she made her way home in Ealing, west London.

But he will also face questions about as many as five other unsolved murders and attempted killings when he leaves his cell at maximum security HMP Frankland.

Yesterday, the Mirror revealed Bellfield - serving a whole-life term for the murders of Marsha McDonnell, Amelie Delagrange and schoolgirl Milly - had been questioned under caution.

It’s believed he was interviewed for six hours and his statement could lead to a fresh search for Elizabeth’s body. Reports claimed he drew a map of where he dumped her body.

A Met Police spokesman said: “A 54-year-old male was interviewed under caution. Enquiries continue.”

Bellfield’s signed confession is said to include chilling details of Elizabeth’s final moments and offered to show detectives the exact location where he buried her.

At the time of Elizabeth’s disappearance he would have been 31 and working as a nightclub bouncer.

He earned the moniker the “Bus Stop Killer” because he stalked girls and young women who passed, approaching them in his van.

He was living in west London, not far from Elizabeth’s last known sighting.

She vanished as she walked back from Thames Valley University after she handed in an assignment.

His statement reportedly included how he killed her as well as admitting five other attempted murders.

Bellfield - serving two life terms - handed the confession to solicitor Theresa Clark.

He also claimed to have carried out the notorious Chillenden murders, during which Dr Lin Russell and her daughters were attacked as they walked along a country lane in Chillenden, Kent, in July 1996.

They were tied up, blindfolded, and bludgeoned with a claw hammer.

Josie, who was nine at the time, survived but suffered severe head injuries. It took a year before she could speak.

Drug addict Michael Stone, 62, was eventually jailed for the crime despite denying involvement.

He was found guilty of two charges of murder and one of attempted murder in 1998 and again in 2001, after the Court of Appeal quashed his conviction due to concerns about a prosecution witness. Stone has always maintained his innocence.

Milly was kidnapped and murdered in March 2002 aged 13. She was walking home when she was abducted in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. Her body was found six months later.

Marsha was beaten to death close to her home in Hampton, Richmond, in February 2003, before Bellfield struck again in August 2004, killing 22-year-old French student Amelie on Twickenham Green, in south west London.

He also attempted to murder Kate Sheedy by running her over in May 2004 in Isleworth, west London, leaving the 18-year-old with horrific injuries including a collapsed lung.
