Dan Walker has defended King Charles over his "grumpy" appearance at his Coronation over the weekend.

The presenter, 46, has been quick to stand up for the King against critics after footage emerged of His Majesty arriving to Westminster Abbey early.

King Charles and Queen Camilla were six minutes ahead of schedule, as they got to the ceremony five minutes before the Prince and Princess of Wales.

As they waited, the King and Queen chatted to each other but some called Charles "grumpy".

A lip reader believes Charles said: "We can never be on time. This is a negative.

"There’s always something... This is boring," Sky News reports.

Taking to Twitter, the former BBC Breakfast presenter said: “Man in his 70s gets a bit grumpy... :ike every man in his 70s ever.”

Dan's stance divided opinion as one person responded: "Yes just reminds me of everywhere we go, we’re still late because of the kids!"

"Plus it was raining. Every Brit grumbles in the rain when things don’t go to plan," another added.

Someone else remarked: "Probably feeling very nervous...it wasn’t an everyday occurrence."

Whilst a user quipped: "Dan you after a title [laughing emoji] give over defending him."

And another commented: "Could anyone ever imagine the Queen doing this."

Sources recently claimed that the King was left "exhausted" after his busy Coronation weekend which saw him throw several events.

Over the Coronation weekend, Dan had to abandon his plans thanks to the weather.

The TV presenter was planning to travel to King Charles' celebrations by bike as he covered the historic event for Channel 5.

Former Football Focus host Dan revealed he was "abandoning" his plans after getting caught out in a thunderstorm.

Posting a drenched selfie on his social media, he wrote: "Just got absolutely drenched in a huge thunderstorm in London. Abandoning plans to cycle to Buckingham Palace for tonight’s Channel 5 news.

"See you at 5 on 5… need a few hours with a hair dryer first."

It wasn't the first time King Charles was labelled frustrated in public as he previously gained attention on social media when he became agitated at a leaky fountain pen during a visit to Belfast last year.

Speaking in frustration as he handed the pen to his wife, Queen Camilla, he said: "Oh god I hate this [pen]!", to which Camilla responded: "Oh look, it's going everywhere."

The King managed to wipe his fingers clean but was still frustrated with the inconvenience the pen had caused, as he seemed to indicate the writing utensil has a history of getting in the way.

He said as he walked away: "I can't bear this bloody thing ... every stinking time!"

Whilst a similar incident occurred on Saturday as his pen didn't seem to work as intended during the important service, as he could be seen grimacing as he placed the lid back on top of the stationery item.
