Harry Kane has overtaken Wayne Rooney to become the second-highest goalscorer in Premier League history, with his header in Tottenham's 1-0 win over Crystal Palace his 209th league goal.

Kane reached the milestone in just 317 games and is now chasing down the all-time record which is currently held by Alan Shearer, who netted a whopping 260 Premier League goals in 441 games. Speaking after Tottenham's win, their first under acting head coach Ryan Mason, Kane said it was a "special feeling" to have gone past Rooney.

"It's nice to get on the scoresheet and when you win it feels that bit sweeter," he told BBC Match of the Day. "I want to keep scoring goals so to pass someone like Wayne Rooney, one of the best players in this country, is a special feeling."

Mason, meanwhile, added: "Harry is just Harry. It is a clinical finish. His overall play was outstanding. He's a team player but all his individual accolades are well deserved."

Shearer, Kane and Rooney are the only three players to have scored more than 200 Premier League goals, with Andy Cole sat fourth on the all-time list with 187 goals. Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero is fifth with 184, while Frank Lampard is the only midfielder to make the top ten with 177 goals.

Arsenal hero Thierry Henry is just two goals behind Lampard with 175, while Robbie Fowler scored 163 goals and Jermain Defoe netted 162. Michael Owen rounds out the top ten, having scored 150 goals during stints at Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester United and Stoke.

And Shearer very much expects Kane to go on and break his all-time record one day, admitting in March: "I'm cool with it. I know how much he wants it - he's told me - which is fine, because I was exactly the same.

"If he stays fit and stays in this country then he'll do it. It's just a matter of when. I'm a huge fan of his. He's a fantastic player. I've had it [the record] for such a long time that I've always said it'll go one day.

"I thought Rooney might have a great chance of doing it. Obviously he slowed down and then went over to America. It's going to go one day, so if it goes [to Kane] then I'll be the first to shake his hand."
