Tucker Carlson has cracked a joke about being unemployed in his first appearance since being fired from Fox News last month.

The former Fox star, 52, gave a speech at the Oxford Performing Arts Centre in Oxford, Alabama, which was in aid of the annual fundraiser for Rainbow Omega.

Speaking to a crowd of more than 1,000 people, Tucker made light of his jobless situation when he said: "I'm probably the first unemployed person you ever invited to speak."

The sold-out show to the packed crowd had tickets priced between $50 to $125 to hear Tucker give a one-hour-long speech at the event.

Continually making light of his situation and firing from Fox News, Tucker added: "It's funny. I never give speeches because I'm working.

The conservative commentator parted ways with Fox News last month when it was announced he was leaving after more than a decade of working for the network.

Fox News has not yet provided a reason for firing Tucker from their channel, but rumours and speculation for his exit have been spiralling ever since it was announced in April.

Some reports are now stating that his axing came after he allegedly used misogynistic slurs against his female colleagues on a regular basis.

Following his sudden and shocking departure from the channel, a series of text messages were released, which were allegedly sent by Tucker.

In one message, he slammed Maria Bartiromo's interview of former Trump attorney Sidney Powell in which she claimed Tucker was "insulting, demanding and rude".

Tucker allegedly sent a text to Fox's chief political correspondent Bret Baier, asking: "Does she attack me?"

Bret then replied: "Says you were rude and that's why she didn't respond. Ha."

In the messages, which were obtained by The Daily Beast, Tucker hit back at Bret with: "C**t. I mean it."
