Former boxer Amir Khan revealed that he asked his fellow campmates to vote him out of I’m A Celebrity – before he did something silly.

The camp was forced to vote out one of its members in a secret ballot, but in scenes not screened in full, the 36-year-old former light-welterweight champion told his fellow stars to vote for him to make things easier.

This also avoided him getting into anything controversial like his first 2017 appearance where he ate a basket of strawberries meant for the whole group.

Amir explained: “I didn’t want to see anyone else go to be honest with you. I hope people at home say, ‘Amir has made a massive difference to the first time.’

“I thought, I’ll be the one to put my hand up. It’s best to leave on a good note than do something silly… which I think was coming!”

Amongst his challenges he took on was World’s End where he was on a ledge 1,100 metres high on the Mariepskop mountain range. He also handled snakes and crocodiles in Supermarket Shriek. Amir said: “The Trials were really hard comparing them to Australia.

“I was so petrified of spiders, snakes and heights I thought, ‘I’ve just got to give it a go’.”

And despite being in there with other celebrities, he admitted he struggled to remember everyone’s names.

He said: “I didn’t really know anyone in camp when I entered. I’m really bad. The only people I knew in there were Toff and Carol Vorderman. Luckily, they all had their names on the back of their T-shirts so sometimes I’d have a little peek at their backs.

“I got on really well with Jordan [Banjo]. We’re a similar age and he really loves boxing.

“He was telling me about fights that I didn’t know about, which was a bit embarrassing.

“Paul Burrell is a really lovely guy.

“The last two or three days in camp we really got close.”

* I’m A Celebrity...South Africa continues tonight at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
