American talk show host Jerry Springer has been laid to rest in a private ceremony held in Chicago, according to reports.

The beloved broadcaster died last month after a short battle with pancreatic at the age of 79, with his family and loved ones now celebrating his life at a funeral held in his home state.

Jerry's funeral is reported to have taken place last Sunday (April 30), just a matter of days after his family announced the news of his sudden and unexpected passing.

Held in a Chicago suburb, it is reported that the funeral was very small and private, with a public memorial scheduled for later this month.

The private ceremony was "attended by a small group of people and followed traditional Jewish customs", according to Page Six.

TMZ have reported that a public memorial is set to take place later this month on May 16 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The public memorial will take place in the area in which where Jerry served as mayor from 1977 until 1978.

The event is said to be free and ticketed for the general public to attend to pay tribute to Jerry, his life and his legacy.

Described as a "good overview of his life and legacy in and out of work", the event will also celebrate and showcase his involvement in politics and entertainment.

Jerry's death was confirmed on April 27, with a statement from his family confirming that he passed away peacefully at his home in Chicago.

A source said that Jerry was battling pancreatic cancer after being diagnosed a few months ago, with his health sadly taking a turn for the worse.

Releasing a statement at the time of his passing, family spokesperson Jene Galvin said: "Jerry's ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word."

"He's irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely," he added.

The spokesperson then continued to TMZ : "But memories of his intellect, heart and humour will live on."
